Boba Tea vs Bubble Tea: What is Boba Tea?

Boba tea, also known as pearl milk tea or tapioca tea, is a popular drink that originated in Taiwan in the early 1980s. This drink includes chewy tapioca balls, known as boba, as a topping. Boba tea typically consists of a tea base, such as black or green tea, mixed with milk or non-dairy alternatives like almond or oat milk. Sweeteners like sugar or flavored syrups are often added to the drink, along with the boba pearls.

The boba pearls are made from tapioca starch derived from the cassava root. They are usually cooked in boiling water until they become soft and chewy and are then added to the drink. Boba pearls come in various flavors, such as plain, honey, or fruit-infused, and add a fun and unique texture to the drink.

Boba tea is usually served with a wide straw that allows the tapioca balls to be sucked up along with the tea.

Boba Tea vs Bubble Tea: What is Bubble Tea?

Bubble tea is a more general term that can refer to a wider variety of tea-based drinks, which may or may not include boba as a topping. Bubble tea can include different tea bases, such as black tea, green tea, or fruit teas, and may also be mixed with milk or non-dairy alternatives. Sweeteners like sugar, honey, or flavored syrups can also be added to the drink.

The term “bubble” in bubble tea refers to the frothy foam that forms on top of certain types of tea, such as shaken or blended teas. This foam is created by vigorously shaking the tea with ice and other ingredients in a cocktail shaker or blender, which gives the tea a creamy and frothy texture.

When boba is added as a topping, it is said that bubble tea has bubbles at the top and the bottom.

Differences

The main difference between boba tea and bubble tea is the inclusion of boba pearls as a topping in boba tea. While bubble tea may or may not include boba, it can include other toppings such as fruit jelly, grass jelly, or aloe vera cubes. On the other hand, Boba tea always includes boba pearls as a defining feature.

I have consulted several sources looking for other differences between these drinks.

Some say boba tea is known for its chewy and bouncy texture, while bubble tea can have a creamy and frothy texture from the foam on top. Others say boba tea typically contains a tea base, while bubble tea can have fruit and herbal tea bases.  Yet, other sources say there are differences between the size of the tapioca balls in the drinks.

The thing is that in my experience, I have not been able to notice some of the differences stated in these sources.  Also, these drinks are highly customizable.  If a person wants a drink in a specific way, the lines of what is what start to blur.

So, other than whether the drink has tapioca balls or not, I do not think there is a point in trying to get technical.  Even with a main difference, I believe the names will be used interchangeably.

Which One Should You Choose?

When choosing between bubble tea and boba tea, the decision ultimately boils down to personal preference. If you enjoy a drink with bold flavors and a variety of toppings, then bubble tea is the way to go. On the other hand, if you’re a fan of creamy textures and traditional tapioca pearls, then boba tea might be your go-to option.

It’s important to note that bubble tea and boba tea provide a refreshing and delicious drink for any occasion. Adding bubbles, whether traditional tapioca pearls or popping boba, adds a delightful texture to the drink and can enhance the overall experience.
